Did Bigfoot Really Exist? How Gigantopithecus Became Extinct

A reconstruction of Gigantopithecus. Image courtesy of Flickr user Sam_Wise
Bigfoot. Sasquatch. Yeti. The Abominable Snowman. Whatever you want to call it, such a giant, mythical ape is not real—at least, not anymore. But more than a million years ago, an ape as big as a polar bear lived in South Asia, until going extinct 300,000 years ago.
Scientists first learned of Gigantopithecus in 1935, when Ralph von Koenigswald, a German paleoanthropologist, walked into a pharmacy in Hong Kong and found an unusually large primate molar for sale. Since then, researchers have collected hundreds of Gigantopithecus teeth and several jaws in China, Vietnam and India. Based on these fossils, it appears Gigantopithecus was closely related to modern orangutans and Sivapithecus, an ape that lived in Asia about 12 to 8 million years ago. With only dentition to go on, it’s hard to piece together what this animal was like. But based on comparisons with gorillas and other modern apes, researchers estimate Gigantopithecus stood more than 10 feet tall and weighed 1,200 pounds (at most, gorillas only weigh 400 pounds). Given their size, they probably lived on the ground, walking on their fists like modern orangutans.
Fortunately, fossil teeth do have a lot to say about an animal’s diet. And the teeth of Gigantopithecus also provide clues to why the ape disappeared.
The features of the dentition—large, flat molars, thick dental enamel, a deep, massive jaw—indicate Gigantopithecus probably ate tough, fibrous plants (similar to Paranthropus). More evidence came in 1990, when Russell Ciochon, a biological anthropologist at the University of Iowa, and colleagues (PDF) placed samples of the ape’s teeth under a scanning electron microscope to look for opal phytoliths, microscopic silica structures that form in plant cells. Based on the types of phyoliths the researchers found stuck to the teeth, they concluded Gigantopithecus had a mixed diet of fruits and seeds from the fig family Moraceae and some kind of grasses, probably bamboo. The combination of tough and sugary foods helps explain why so many of the giant ape’s teeth were riddled with cavities. And numerous pits on Gigantopithecus‘s teeth—a sign of incomplete dental development caused by malnuntrition or food shortages—corroborate the bamboo diet. Ciochon’s team noted bamboo species today periodically experience mass die-offs, which affect the health of pandas. The same thing could have happened to Gigantopithecus.

Further evidence of Gigantopithecus‘ food preferences and habitat was published last November. Zhao LingXia of the Chinese Academy of Sciences and colleagues analyzed carbon isotopes in a sample of Gigantopithecus teeth. Plants have different forms of carbon based on their type of photosynthesis; this carbon footprint is then recorded in the teeth of animals that eat plants. The team determined Gigantopithecus—and the animals living alongside it, such as deer, horses and bears—ate only C3 plants, evidence the ape lived in a forested environment. This work also supports the proposed bamboo diet, as bamboo is a C3 plant.
So what happened to this Pleistocene Yeti? Zhang’s team suggested the rise of the Tibetan plateau 1.6 million to 800,000 years ago altered the climate of South Asia, ushering in a colder, drier period when forests shrank. Other factors could have exacerbated this crisis. Gigantopithecus‘s neighbor, Homo erectus, may have over-hunted and/or outcompeted their larger ape cousin. And at least one dental study indicates Gigantopithecus developed and matured very slowly—a sign they probably had low reproductive rates, which can elevate a species’ risk of going extinct.
Some Bigfoot hunters say Gigantopithecus is alive and well, hiding out in the forests of the Pacific Northwest. Other Sasquatch enthusiasts, however, point out this is unlikely, as Bigfoot is reported to be a swift, agile, upright walker—not a lumbering, 1,200-pound quadruped.

Bigfoot Encounters

THE B. S. OF BIGFOOT ENCOUNTERS

DISTORTION OF THE TRUTH:
Is BIGFOOT ENCOUNTERS a Reliable Source?

The old Bigfoot-related web site, Bigfoot Encounters has been for years a very useful and rather extensive resource of historical materials on the Bigfoot/Sasquatch phenomenon. It is run quite diligently by one whose initials are "B.S.", and purports to be some kind of ARCHIVE and annals of Bigfooting. It is indeed a rather vast collection of articles and information, much of it otherwise lost to time and age. Much of it, though, is copyrighted material, appropriated to the site and incorporated into pages bearing the BFE logo and style, which also will not allow copying and pasting for citation and quoting. "Fair Use" is claimed, but really does not apply to the full-scale appropriation of material owned by others. Occasional use as such is generally tolerated on the internet for historical purposes, but to found a whole web site on it is a rather blatant mis-use of the Fair Use doctrine. The only thing that really lets this slip by is that the site is non-commercial (this will change when the proprietor's book comes out, however, sometime this year, supposedly).

B.S., in the one common photo of
her available, as no one seems to
have saved the beach bunny one
she used to use on the old IVBC.
What the site DOES do, beyond mostly nobly preserving this useful information, is to FURTHER THE AGENDA of Ms. B.S. It generally does so subtly, but often glaringly, as in the case with her manipulation and alteration of an article about long-time Bigfoot researcher, Larry Lund. It actually adds DEFAMATORY statements INTO the transcribed article. This is not only a form of misinformation and distortion, it is (in my opinion, though I am no lawyer) a form of libel. Her web site, ostensibly some kind of "archive," is shot through with these kind of things, manipulations, alterations, additions, and mythifications along the lines of her own ideology and belief system. The question arises, How do we know what is real, and what has been manipulated. Is this a form of "hoaxing"? What is her agenda? Case in point, especially: The (Supposed) Bluff Creek Bigfoot Massacre. Primary ideology: Bigfoot is Human. They killed a family of them in Bluff Creek, and hence John Green and the others, in the eyes of BFE, are "murderers." I have caught outright fabrications inserted into her Bluff Creek timeline. A real shame, it is, that such a great collection of materials can be brought into question by such machinations. Here follow a few examples. Stick around for the rest of the Lund article issue, the original article of which may be found by clicking the image above.

For background, read this blog's MINI-INTERVIEW WITH LARRY LUND, from last year, for a taste of the kind of cool guy he is.

If you are already aware of these preceding issues, skip down to see the alterations that Bigfoot Encounters has made to a publicly published newspaper article, with the obvious sole intent to disparage and damage the reputation of a long-time fellow Bigfoot researcher.
If you know of any other instances of such memory-hole alterations of the facts on BFE, do let me know so they may be posted here.
*******
The image of Patterson with "Juvenile Tracks" that
B.S. claimed was taken around the time of the "Labor
Day Trip" to Bluff Creek, showing the tracks he
supposedly got at that time.

A listing in the California Sightings section used to mention Roger Patterson being in Bluff Creek over the Labor Day weekend, 1967, such trip never being substantiated with proof. I asked B.S. repeatedly to come forth with proof of this supposedly "historical" assertion, but she would not. It is normally understood that Patterson and Bob Gimlin were in the Mt. St. Helens area at that time searching for Sasquatch, not in California. Checking today I notice that the listing has now been changed to: "Summer, 1967 Roger Patterson poured a plaster of paris cast of a left and right 9" child's track and shows Al Hodgson the tracks while he was up there."There is really only one reason that someone who believes the Patterson-Gimlin Film is real would want to place Patterson there earlier than mid-late October of that year, and that is to support the MK Davis so-called "Massacre Theory." Ms. B.S. is an advocate of this theory.
HOW MANY OTHER "SUBTLE" CHANGES HAVE BEEN MADE TO THE "HISTORICAL RECORD" FOUND ON BIGFOOT ENCOUNTERS?

********
Still, to this very day, despite all the refutation of the photos, the "Massacre," and of any visit by Bob Titmus to the PGF site until days AFTER the filming, the Bigfoot Encounters page manipulating John Green's Obituary for Bob Titmus still bears the MK Davis Massacre-related stills supposedly showing Titmus on the site at the time of filming, supposedly sometime in August or September, with the rifle in his hands and the tracking dog there. This is not only a dishonor to Titmus and Green, it is a blatant manipulation of the truth. Even in the search result summary, I'd assume from some kind of metatag or keyword in the page code, she drops this little bit of slurring insult: "Bob Titmus obituary, John Green exposed as a liar himself re: the Patterson film...". NICE.. and of course, the article does nothing to prove this accusatory hearsay. B.S. substantiates this by saying she has certain papers, that of course only SHE has; so, I guess, whenever B.S. wants to insult someone all she has to do is cite her SECRET personal collection. Or maybe she'll cite one of the false lies she's inserted into the "archives" on her web site?

Chiazzari and Green.
NOT TITMUS.
Go see: http://www.bigfootencounters.com/stories/btitmus.htm

The REAL person who is shown in those photos is the pilot who flew Green, Moffit and Dahinden along with the dog down from Canada. This person has recently surfaced and emphatically declared that it was HE who is shown in those photos. His name? Keith Chiazzari. On January 17th of 2012 he posted this as a comment on this blog:
"I was the pilot of the Cessna 185 that flew John Green, Rene Dahinden and Dale Moffit to Bluff Creek on the 28th August 1967 returning to Chilliwack on the 31st and still have my pilot's logbook to prove it. The photo does not show Bob Titmus but me aged 24. I have posted some photos on other Bigfoot websites. The theory that a massacre took place is laughable!"

In one article that has since been deleted after I published an expose on parts of it, B.S. mentioned "splicing" done to the PGF to hide a certain "something" at the start. It was a very lengthy article that never came out and said directly why the splicing was done, but by implication and innuendo it was made more than clear. It included this image, to which I've added some titles. It reveals just about ALL you need to know about the beliefs of B.S. about what happened that day in Bluff Creek when the film was shot. It also explains her vehement hatred of John Green, Bob Titmus, and anyone allied with them... she thinks they are murderers.

*******
Here is the Bigfoot Encounters LARRY LUND ARTICLE web page altered version, with defamatory commentary added in by B.S. as if these statements were part of the original article. The commentaries added to the article below are from Larry Lund himself. The parts I've bolded in red are the lines that B.S. added. In no way may the BF Encounters article be construed as satire or humor, as it is in no way indicated, and the article is presented in a wholly straightforward way, as if this were the way it was published.

The Incredible Story Of Bigfoot

Every so often he makes the news. There will be a flurry of sightings in a lot of different places. Then all will be quiet until he resurfaces again. We always call Bigfoot "he" but there must be a "she" to keep the Bigfoot legend and their population going.

But is Bigfoot real? If he is real we have had a devil of a time finding him and his home. We need to know if he is an animal or more closely related to humans. Let's get to know the interesting character known as Bigfoot.

About the only place that Bigfoot sightings have not been reported is Antarctica. The scientific name is Gigantopithecus Blacki. but it is called hundreds of different names. In North America he is commonly called Bigfoot or Sasquatch, there are also skunk apes, Zug-wa, the ASA monster, the Cow-man, the Lizardman, the Goat-man, the Arkansas-Missouri Line wild beast, the Clanton Booger, and the Louisiana wookie, just to name a few.

Around the world you will find Yeti, the Abominable snowman, Koolakamba, the De Loys Ape, Hejkal, Yowie, Batutut, Curinqueans, Busau, Mapinguari, and Gougou, again to name just a few. It seems that each country or nationality has a Bigfoot of its own.

Depending on the area and who is describing Bigfoot, he is anywhere from 5 feet to 14 feet tall. It is said that the female is smaller than the male. The weight is between 407 pounds to 1143 pounds.

The fur covering his body is usually long and ranges in color depending on the climate. There is black, various shades of brown, reddish, and white fur. Some have been reported to have faint stripes or spots. Faces, palms, and feet are hairless. Some have been said to have bare chests and some have receding hairlines.

Bigfoot has a large square or a conical head set on a short thick neck. His brow is large and prominent. His eyes are deep set and of a dark color. They range from close together to wide set. His ears are large to nearly invisible because of fur covering them. The nose can be flat all the way up to quite bulbous. His mouth is similar to an ape's mouth. His canine teeth stick out slightly and in some cases small tusks have been reported.

Bigfoot's senses seem to be slightly sharper than a human's with a keen sense of smell and hearing. His eyesight seems to be the same as a human's in the daytime but he has an acute night vision. These may be reasons that he has been able to hide from us for so long.

The overall appearance of Bigfoot has been described as similar to a large ape or bear. He walks on two legs and has long arms that hang loosely at his side. Sometimes he is seen using his knuckles to help in balance as he walks. Often people say there is a musky odor that is like a skunk. Noises he makes are howling noises and sometimes screeches as well as snuffling noises like bears make.

The feet are what gives Bigfoot his name. Once again there are huge differences in sizes. They are anywhere from 12 to 24 inches long and 5 to 13 inches wide. The number of toes is another difference. Some have 4 toes, some 5, and some have 6.  He strides from 2 to 12 feet at a time.

Bigfoot seems to be a loner. Seldom more than one are seen at a time although there are some who say they have seen whole families together. If more than one is seen, it might be mating time.

Even though they seem to be quite docile, as with any creature you don't know, it is a good idea to maintain a safe distance if you come across a suspected Bigfoot. They are agile and surprisingly fast.  There have been some reported injuries from tangling with Bigfoot.

Bigfoot seems to get along well with bears and to a lesser extent mountain lions. It may help hide their whereabouts and also cover the remains of deceased members.

There have been Bigfoot sightings for more than 400 years. Native peoples all over the world have stories and legends about these man/apes.

The first white man to have seen evidence of Bigfoot happened in 1811 near Jasper, Alberta, Canada. David Thompson was a fur trader who found strange footprints in the snow. They were 14 inches long and eight inches wide. The foot had 4 toes.

Then there was Jacko. Jacko was captured in 1884 by a train crew in Canada. He was 4 feet seven inches tall and weighed 147 pounds. Jacko was a "gorilla type" and had long black strong hair. He was extremely strong and could break a stick simply by twisting it. Some people say that Jacko may have been a hoax based on his size and the fact that he looked so much like a chimpanzee.

In 1924 a lumberjack in Canada was captured by a Bigfoot family. He claimed the father and daughter guarded him and the mother and son prepared the meals. These creatures were vegetarians. He didn't tell anyone about his adventure until 1958 because he was afraid that people would think he was crazy.

Also in 1924 a group of miners near Mount St. Helens in Washington state in the United States saw a Bigfoot and shot and killed it. That night their cabin was surrounded by more of the creatures who threw stones, pounded on the walls, and climbed on the roof. They finally left at dawn. The miners packed up and left. The place has since been named Ape Canyon.

Another sighting in 1924 was reported by a prospector near Mount St Helens. He told a forest ranger that his cabin had been attacked by a group of Bigfoots who threw rocks and screamed like apes. He hid under his bed until morning when they left. When he went outside he saw huge footprints.

In 1958 a bulldozer operator was working in California. He came upon enormous footprints and made a plaster cast of one. It was national news and many newspapers printed a picture of the man holding the cast of the big footprint.  That was when the creature became "Bigfoot".

Years later the son of the man who made the original footprints revealed that his father had just been playing a prank. He had a friend carve 16 inch feet out of wood which the son showed reporters. He then strapped them on and walked around leaving the prints. Another worker on the crew said that the man only wanted to scare vandals and thieves who had been bothering equipment. Whatever the original reason, the man went on to make a lot of money from his Bigfoot franchise.

Perhaps the most famous of films made of Bigfoot was made by two men in 1967 in California. They claim it was a female Bigfoot walking across a clearing. It is not a clear picture but there is an animal or human in an animal suit walking. It has never been proven to be a fake although there are some "funny" things about it.

Many proofs of Bigfoot have been found and produced to show evidence that he is real. There have been pictures, movies, plaster casts, and so on. A lot of them have been explained away as normal phenomena or as outright hoaxes.

One "expert" on the subject of Bigfoot claims that there are many different breeds of the creature. Some like the skunk-ape are actually pygmy versions. This person claims that the different kinds of Bigfoot do socialize.

One of the most interesting things I found is that the United States government recognizes Bigfoot. The Army Corps of Engineers wrote the Washington Environmental Atlas in 1975. The atlas cost $200,000 and includes a map with pinpoints for all known sightings of Bigfoot. It contains a description of Bigfoot. It is noted that a sample of supposed Sasquatch hair was analyzed by the FBI who found that it didn't belong to any known animal. After some time a researcher said that the hairs belonged to the deer family. Apparently the analysis of these samples is now mislaid.

Because of the report Sasquatch has been stated to be an animal species. If one were to be captured it could be protected as a threatened or endangered species by the Secretary of the Interior. The emergency protection would last for 120 days until further decisions are made.

Food Cooking May Have Led to Attack

The story goes like this: Gary and Sondra Ellison were living in an old campground on Sanders Creek, a tributary to the Illinois River and around 25 miles from Agness, Oregon. The couple had been living around the area because of a recent downturn in their income. One day in December of 2009 they were given a gift of Salmon from a local person in Agness.

That afternoon they began cooking the fish in a skillet on an open fire at the camp. It was then the couple claims to have had a very large creature, walking upright on two legs, come into camp and start throwing very large rocks at them. They retreated into the motor home to watch the hairy monster take the cooked Salmon off a plate and eat it.

Then they reported the creature turned on the motor home and began shaking it. The creature then broke out a side window at the door while Gary and Sondra were on the floor in the back bed area. Then the creature walked around the motor home looking into the camper. After ten minutes or so the two-legged creature walked back into the heavy woods.

The couple waited for some time to make sure the creature was gone before gathering up their belongings outside and then leaving the campground. Sondra sustained a broken shoulder blade from one of the large rocks thrown.

The couple reported the attack only to be ridiculed and laughed at. It was noted that large rocks and broken glass were found at the site along with some big footprints.

Sorry Folks, but thats all I have at this time.
